PRESIDENTS'S MESSAGE - 2009 Frank Notaro, MAI Long Island Chapter President - Year 2009 I’d like to welcome you to the web site of the Long Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute. Since being founded in 1973, The Long Island Chapter has been one of the leading Chapters in the 22,000 member Appraisal Institute.
Our members provide a wide variety of valuation and consulting services, and represent some of the most experienced, educated and talented real estate professionals practicing in the Long Island, New York metropolitan region. Our members benefit from an array of professional education and advocacy programs and our designated members – SRA for residential and MAI for residential and commercial, are recognized for having extensive training, education and experience.
Although unpleasant, I feel no address could be complete without mentioning the financial crisis that gripped the nation in 2008. The past year has seen the economy and our industry suffer as the lack of credit availability made it difficult for investors and property owners to conduct transactions that require property valuation. However, while the economy appears headed towards recession, the appraisal industry should recover sooner as lenders begin to examine their assets and start to lend in 2009. The increase in appraisal assignments could take a while and until business picks up, I urge everyone to take advantage of the Chapter’s seminars and dinner meetings.
As evidence of the Chapter’s commitment to keeping membership informed on important issues, three seminars concerning the current lending environment will be offered in the first quarter of the year. The State of the Long Island Real Estate Market will be offered on January 27th and feature representatives from leaders in the industrial, retail and office markets; Appraising for FHA on February 9th will prepare residential appraisers for the nuances of appraising for this government sponsored agency that will grow in importance over the next few years; Declining Markets and Sales Concessions on March 3rd, will address residential appraising in the new financial environment.
In addition to the courses and seminars, we also have diner meetings between February and October with topical guest speakers. Our first diner meeting of the year on Thursday, February 5th will feature Paul Lancey of Reckson Associates. He will be making a presentation on the redevelopment of the Nassau Coliseum site called the Lighthouse Project. On Wednesday, March 5th, our speaker is William Shanahan of CB Richard Ellis who will speak about current market conditions.
Within our web site you will find a Chapter Member Directory, information about the real estate appraisal profession, our calendar of meetings and educational offerings, industry news, and many other useful links.
I am honored to have been selected by my peers to serve as the 2009 President of the Long Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute. I welcome any questions, comments, or suggestions that you may have.
Frank Notaro, MAI
LIAI Chapter President 2009
