PRESIDENTS'S MESSAGE - 2009 Frank Notaro, MAI Long Island Chapter President - Year 2009 It has been an honor to serve the Chapter as president for 2009. With the help of the Board of Directors, Committee chairs and volunteers, past President Andrew Albro, MAI and our executive director, Francine Morgenstern, I feel we’ve continued the excellence set forth by our predecessors. I am indebted to them for their commitment and professionalism.
It has been a difficult year for the profession. But despite the downturn in the economy, we were able to meet our goal of offering timely and topical seminars, courses and diner meetings. With the help of our committee chairs, the Chapter was able to present the USPAP update three times, Business Practices and Ethics, and 11 seminars.
In addition, the dinner meetings were also well attended. We were able to have representatives from Reckson Associates and Tritec to speak about the Lighthouse Project and the redevelopment of downtown Patchogue, mortgage fraud enforcement agents from the FBI and HUD, a high end commercial broker from CB Richard Ellis and residential real estate expert, Jonathan Miller, MAI, as guest speakers. Much of the credit goes to our program chair and president-elect, Glen Gabberty, SRA, as well as our efforts of increasing our public profile by advertising in the New York Real Estate Journal, Crain’s New York and Real Estate Weekly.
Our program chair and special events committee re-started the mentor program aimed at assisting members towards designation, and for the second year in a row, organized a panel discussion on appraisal legislation which included Bill Garber, Director of Government Relations for the Appraisal Institute, headquarted in Washington. Both events were timely, informative and well attended.
With the help of Research and Technology Chair, Gerard O’Connor, SRA, the Chapter was able to create a sponsorship program that allows firms to advertise on our website with direct links to their websites and email addresses.
Our board and officers continued to participate and advocate for the membership and the profession on a regional and national level. The Chapter was able to send representatives to the Appraisal Institute’s regional conference meetings in Burlington, Vermont, and Mexico and also support LDAC by sending a representative to Washington DC to lobby for the profession. On the state level, past president Matthew Smith, MAI, SRA, continues to tirelessly represent the best interests of appraisers on the State level in Albany.
On a personal note, I had the pleasure of presenting the Chapters first Lifetime Achievement award to David Bradley, MAI, SRA, and bestowing two MAI designations. And despite several starts and stops, we were able to continue the tradition of our annual golf outing.
Looking to 2010, there are some positive developments which should bode well for the economy and the appraisal profession. The nation’s biggest banks are paying back the TARP funds and are back on their feet. Washington is applying pressure on both large and small institutions to begin lending and also advocating they re-assess their commercial portfolios so they can anticipate potential problems.
The events of the past year have emphasized the importance of having independent, professional appraisers involved in the mortgage lending process. As financial institutions return to sound lending policies and practices, quality appraisals are needed more than ever. The standards advocated and promoted by the Institute are necessary to protect homeowners, businesses and investors and I believe, will translate into increased business for our members.
Despite these recent developments, 2010 will be an equally challenging year and the Long Island Chapter is fortunate to have strong leadership in President Glen Gabberty, SRA. Glen’s commitment to the Appraisal Institute and the Chapter is well recognized by his long and distinguished record of service. His drive and devotion are certain to advance our professional interests in the future. I advise all members to support Glen by getting involved and providing ideas.
In closing I’d like to say that I’ve enjoyed the year and thank you for giving me the opportunity. I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy holiday season.
Sincerely
Long Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute
Frank M. Notaro, MAI, SRA
