    PRESIDENTS'S MESSAGE - 2011

    Matthew Guzowski, MAI

Long Island Chapter President - Year 2011

As a proud member of the Long Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, I would like to thank the Membership and the Board of Directors for allowing me to serve as President for the 2011 term. It has truly been an honor.

The mission statement of the Long Island Chapter of The Appraisal Institute is to provide our membership with the highest level of professional education, services, and support in order for our members to reach their professional, educational, and financial objectives. In 2011, I believe we have attained these goals. We have improved communication with the membership and reached out to unaffiliated appraisers in an effort to encourage new membership; continued service to our membership and chapter development, including the continuance of the Chapter Mentor Program to assist chapter associates on achieving their designations. This year, the Long Island Chapter has seen three members awarded the MAI designation: Charissa Kwan, Paul Dyckes and Tonia Vailas, and we have welcomed three new associate members and two trainee members.

Also this year, the Long Island Chapter awarded four scholarships to Associate Members: John Biordi, Matthew Boylan, Alan Hudesman, and Gary Lane. I am also pleased to congratulate Long Island member Keith Stillman as the 2011 National award recipient of the Appraisal Institute Education Trust Designation Scholarship.

Our Chapter Region IV representatives have worked diligently all year, participating in Conference calls, and attending Region Conferences working with all AI Regions and AI Chicago contacts for improved communications to the national level. We had a hardworking and active participant in Ketih Stillman, who was our Chapter representative in attendance at the Leadership Development Conference in Washington DC. The Long Island Chapter has met local and regional demand for seminars and educational offerings to our members and other appraisers, offering a full complement of courses and seminars throughout the year, including two Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD) seminars, in response to members’ demand. The Chapter also held monthly seminar dinner meetings with renowned guest speakers at each and every meeting.

Going forward, I encourage each member to accept and embrace the four key elements of The Appraisal Institute’s new strategic plan for the future success of the organization including: International Initiatives, Core Competency, Candidacy for Membership Program, and New AI Business Model. Looking to the coming year, the Long Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute is fortunate to have strong leadership in President William Kinn, Senior Vice President Kevin Timoney, Vice President Gerard O’Connor, Secretary Anthony Iaccio, and Treasurer Kathy Rairden. Year 2012 will bring us additional economic challenges, and the demand for highly-educated, professional appraisers will continue to be strong. Our Chapter leaders commitment to the appraisal industry, our organization and its members is certain to protect and advance our professional interests into the future.

I wish all a happy and healthy holiday season.
    Sincerely

Long Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute

    President’s Message September 2011

This year has seen continued success of the Appraisal Institute and the Long Island Chapter. The Chapter has provided qualifying education to interested appraisers and has offered continuing education programs to members and non members, including 2 seminars on the new Uniform Appraisal Dataset (UAD) requirements.

The Chapter mentoring program continues. On September 22 we held a Social Networking Meeting to encourage Associate members to mix and mingle and encourage one another on the path to designation. Chapter leaders and mentors were in attendance to answer questions.

Upcoming seminars will be held on October 18: a 3 hour afternoon seminar “Trends and Projections Affecting Real Estate Values” taught by Ed Lombardo, and a 2 hour evening seminar “Wall Street and Commercial Real Estate” taught by Everett Allen Greer, MAI. Upcoming courses include USPAP 7 Hour Update on November 11 and Business Practices and Ethics on December 2. Chapter Installation Dinner and Seminar will be held November 15.

The golf outing, at our new venue of Rock Hill Golf Course in Manorville, was quite a success. Plans for next year are already being made. The golf outing is run as a social event, so that both golfers and non golfers will enjoy the day and feel welcome.

The Appraisal Institute held its first annual meeting in several years at the new Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas as its convention site. In an attempt to entice AI members to attend, face-to-face meetings for all ten AI regions were included in the overall meeting schedule and discounts for staying at the convention hotel and attending some of the sessions were also added to the package. There were 20 members from our Region IV, including myself, Bill Kinn, MAI, Kevin Matheson, SRA, and Anthony Marmorale, SRA from the Long Island Chapter.

The opening session began early Sunday, with "State of the AI" statements by President Joe Magdziarz, MAI, President-Elect Sara Stephens, MAI and others.
There also was a presentation of the AI Strategic Planning Committee. The Region IV meeting included discussion on: funding educational shortfalls, research monetary contributions, the importance of joint meetings with sister organizations, and selecting a new nominating committee for National positions. Each chapter president also submitted a status report on his/her chapter’s status and activities.

Government Relations reviewed bills before Congress that could affect appraisers, which included requiring a qualified appraiser for tax deduction valuation, public pension plans to report fair market value, liabilities and costs for RE appraisers, establishing AMCs as viable compliance path, establishing review standards for mortgage-backed securities, SEC proposal that investors note if appraisals are "MAI certified" or not, business value with going concern to include allocation by RE appraisers, defining qualified appraiser with AI designations, and IVS revisions.

Education sessions were held on Monday through Wednesday, including “Introduction to Green Buildings", “Loss prevention for liability insurance”, and “Ways to Expand your Appraisal Business”, among others. Awards were presented at the Wednesday luncheon. The AI Annual Meeting for Year 2012 is scheduled for July 31 through August 2 in San Diego, CA. Mark your calendars now so you don't miss out on a great opportunity to network, take educational courses, and interact with the AI leadership and other members.

The Long Island Chapter is very active within the appraisal community and will continue to be a leader in our industry. Visit our website at: www.liappraisal.com for a listing of all Chapter programs and events. We encourage membership in LIAI. There are many benefits, including discounts on Appraisal Institute programs and special events, access to AI National Members only section, the Lum Library, and program and product discounts.

    President’s Message January 2011

It is an honor and privilege to serve The Long Island Chapter as your President in 2011, along with my fellow Year 2011 officers, directors and Executive Committee Members. As the 2011 President, I believe all of our dedicated members will continue to responsibly carry out all 2011 chapter business. I am confident you will all welcome and mentor the current and incoming chapter associates as they strive to become future MAI or SRA members of the Appraisal Institute. As we all know, chapter associate members are the life blood of the continuance of The Appraisal Institute.
After attending The Appraisal Institute’s Installation of Incoming 2011 President Joseph Magdziarz (“Mags”) in Miami, it is clear that The Appraisal Institute’s 2011 national officers and directors are implementing a Bold, New Master Plan for the continued success of The Appraisal Institute in the competitive global marketplace based upon four key strategic elements, which are:
    I. International Initiatives
    II. Core Competency
    III. Candidate Member Program
    IV. New Business Model
The Appraisal Institute International Initiative now has The Appraisal Institute involved in over 50 countries worldwide. [The UPAV Conference in Miami, held jointly with The Appraisal Institute National Installation, was attended by appraisers from over 100 countries throughout the world.]
The Core Competency goal is to maintain the highest level of competency in the appraisal field, while at the same time, recruiting PhDs and other potential new members by offering “alternatives” to the experience requirements for designations from The Appraisal Institute.
The “Candidate Member” is to be “reintroduced” by the Appraisal Institute as a way of recognizing the current “associate” members in a more positive format. (i.e., MBA candidates - not MBA associates.)
The New Business Model of the Appraisal Institute will replace the now obsolete 79-year old business model, as The Appraisal Institute must adapt to the changing world and world market. [AI is now an “international and global entity”.] The Appraisal Institute is now planning to meet the requirements and demands of the market, the public and its members worldwide.
These new Appraisal Institute initiatives for 2011 are a change for the positive aimed at the continued success of the organization on a global level. All of these Appraisal Institute efforts are to the benefit of our chapter, national and international “associates”, who will be the future leaders of The Appraisal Institute.
“The mission statement of the Long Island Chapter of The Appraisal Institute is to provide our membership with the highest level of professional education, services, and support in order for our members to reach their professional, educational, and financial objectives.”
The 2011 Long Island Chapter “Mission and Goals” are:
    1. Improving communication with the membership and reaching out to unaffiliated appraisers in an effort to encourage new membership.

    2. Continuing service to our membership and chapter development, including the continuance of the Chapter Mentor Program to assist chapter associates on achieving their designations.

    3. Region IV chapter representatives will be utilizing our Chicago and Washington, DC Appraisal Institute contacts for improved communications to the national level.

    4. Meet local and regional demand for seminars and educational offerings to our members and the market place.

    5. Accepting and embracing the four key elements of The Appraisal Institute’s new strategic plan for the future success of the organization.

In the past year our chapter has remained a leader in its contributions to the appraisal profession with its educational offerings, its representation and contributions to the AI on the regional and national level and in the professionalism displayed by our membership.

Further contributions to the profession by our chapter include our ongoing Associate Member On-Track Mentoring program, the LIAI Chapter Scholarship program, and the Chapter Membership Incentive, which offers new Chapter members a free registration to a LIAI Chapter seminar.
Additional benefits to our membership include advertising our programs, Designations and membership benefits, in Newsday, The New York RE Journal, Long Island Business News, Real Estate Weekly and Crain's New York.
Looking forward, 2011 brings us another year closer to economic recovery, and the demand for highly-educated, professional appraisers has never been stronger. I look forward to hearing from you and to continuing to work with you on behalf of our profession, our organization and its members.
    Sincerely,
    Long Island Chapter Appraisal Institute
