    PRESIDENTS'S MESSAGE - 2007

    Anthony M. Marmorale, SRA

Long Island Chapter President - Year 2007

“PORTRAIT OF A CHAPTER: THE LONG ISLAND CHAPTER OF THE APPRAISAL INSTITUTE”

Long Island has been making waves since 1970 when it was granted its own Charter; by the release of the Counties of Nassau and Suffolk from the jurisdiction of the Greater New York Chapter of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers. This vision was spearheaded by the “Committee for the Formation of A Long Island Chapter”, chaired by Robert Snyder, and including members Michael Duff, William Gibson, Carl Rothleder, Henry Schreiber, Jerry Snover and Robert Thomsen.

The first order of business was the celebration of the establishment of a Chapter of its own. The Long Island Chapter held “Charter Night” on May 27, 1970 at the Salisbury Club, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow.

Among the original signers of the Charter in 1970 were Don Bailey, Florence Bromley, Ray Brower Sr., Margery Burns, John Caesar, James J. Clarke, Francis Corcoran, Matthew Gadjek,Michael Galgano, William Gill, Dorothy Heyman, Jim MacCrate, John MacCrate, Dick Marino, Bob Marks, Ron Matuza, Bert Nelson, Joe Pirog, Douglass Roesch, Jay Rosenthal, Stephen Schembri, Henry Schreiber, Robert Thomsen, Douglas Van Riper, and Richard Winters, who envisioned a Long Island Chapter in which creation of an area identity would become a reality. The belief was that the appraisers on Long Island all felt a need for a Chapter of its own to bring us closer together and pool our talents, and that we might gain recognition in the “Public View” and to help each other improve our techniques and abilities in appraisal work. Past President 1979-80 Douglass Roesch states: “It definitely did do this. The public became more aware of the value of an honest and expert appraisal and many businesses began to utilize this tool. We stressed the value of the use of DESIGNATED appraisers. The Appraisal Institute has continued this throughout the years.”

From the Chapter’s first development of committees, including Education and Public Relations, this vision of an area identity became a reality with a strong Chapter presence in the business and public communities. The Chapter and its members have served as catalysts for effective change in advancing the success of appraisers in the real estate industry. The Chapter and its leaders, have through its history, studied the role, financial standards, and professional development of men and women in the appraisal industry; have provided quality education, developed concrete recommendations, recognized opportunities and developments in the industry, enhanced initiatives, and effected changes to challenges. Over the last 10 years, LIAI Chapter members have modeled National policy and made significant contributions in National areas such as Education, Publications and Government. Participants include: Gary Taylor, Matt Smith, Robert Brancato, Richard Meyer, Richard Marchitelli, James Taylor, and Dan Aarons.

Current Chapter President, Anthony Marmorale, SRA remarked that when he first became an appraiser and began to attend meetings, he did so with the intention of meeting associates from work. It was this and more; it was a social networking opportunity, a chance to meet owners of the large appraisal companies in our area, a chance to meet teachers of our educational courses, a chance to learn from more experienced appraisers, and a chance to develop professional friendships. Mr. Marmorale never thought that one day he would be President of the Chapter. It seems as though having a sincere interest in the organization you belong to as well as showing signs of leadership qualities are key characteristics of a Presidential candidate.

The continued success of this chapter lies in the ability of its members to find a benefit in supporting the chapter through leadership and volunteerism, and being able to market our chapter so that the public continues to understand what a designated appraiser is, and what a designation means. We proudly recognize the overwhelming success of our Chapter, with the knowledge and foresight of our Charter members, the leadership of our Presidents, and the participation of our members! The Chapter has evolved to be recognized as a Chapter with involved, committed members and a leading provider of appraisal education and awareness in our counties of Nassau and Suffolk. The Long Island Chapter is vital and strong, and its members have contributed greatly to the AI organization; the decision to grant its charter in 1970 has proved to be a fruitful one!

INSTALLATION DINNER ADDRESS - January 2007

The Appraisal Institute will proudly celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2007. The highlight of this celebration will be in Las Vegas from July 15th to 22nd. There will be continuing education programs as wells as exhibitors from around the country. It is my distinct pleasure to be President of the Long Island Chapter at this historic time. The Appraisal Institute has become the premier organization for the education of real estate appraisers. Membership in this organization has provided appraisers with networking opportunities and access to the best education for real estate appraisers in the nation.

I would like to thank Kevin Matheson, SRA for a year of many accomplishments. Our Long Island Chapter was the recipient of a 2006 Chapter Recognition Award for outstanding achievement in Associate Guidance from the Appraisal Institute. This recognized the program begun by Bob Smith, LIAI Chapter President in 2005, continued by Kevin in 2006; and will be ongoing. It was my pleasure to accept the award in San Francisco in September. In addition, Kevin had as his goal for this past year to provide courses to our members that were needed regardless of whether it meant a profit to our chapter or not. He was successful in offering programs that are not frequently offered in our area.

With the accumulated efforts of our Officers, Directors, and Committee Chairs, our Chapter has continued to be a leader in Education in our Region by maintaining a 29% market share. This is a great accomplishment since the Appraisal Institute has set a goal of 30% market share for all chapters. I appreciate the devotion of our 2006 Board and look forward to working with the 2007 Board in the months to come.

My goals for 2007 are to continue to provide our members with outstanding educational opportunities. I am also committed to assisting our Associates in their endeavors to become designated. Finally, I will begin a marketing program that will promote our chapter and educate the public as to our existence and the importance of choosing an Appraisal Institute appraiser.

As members of this chapter we all should be proud of the accomplishments of our members who represent us on both a Regional and National level. At our Installation of Officers dinner held on December 6, 2006, our National AI President, Dick Powers, presented Long Island Chapter member Matt Smith with the distinguished AI Presidents Award for 2006. This is a great accomplishment and I congratulate Matt on this honor. I would also like to recognize our educational instructors for their high level of expertise that sets our chapter apart from most other chapters.

I would like to thank all of the sponsors for our 2006 Installation dinner for their generosity. I would like to encourage our members and associates to attend our dinner meetings throughout the year for networking and continuing education. At our first two dinner meetings, February 7 and March 20, 2007, we will be raffling off 2 nights accommodations at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas during the AI 75th Anniversary Conference/Celebration in July.

Finally, I would like to thank our Executive Secretary, Francine Morgenstern for her tireless efforts for our chapter. Francine continues to be a great asset to this chapter and I am grateful for her devotion. Anyone interested in becoming involved in our organization please contact myself or Francine. We are here to serve you, so please let us know of any concerns you may have or any ideas for seminars you would like to see.
